Course introduction

Are the Earth’s most dramatic natural events like volcano eruptions, earthquakes and tsunamis things that particularly interest you? If so, Geology is definitely your subject.

Geologists explore how the Earth works and what has happened in the long history of our planet. From this information they can predict the changes that might happen in the future.

The dynamic nature of this scientific discipline, with hands-on work in the field and the laboratory, particularly appeals to practical people. Indeed, you will have many opportunities to expand your knowledge and skills through trips and experimentation.

Why choose
Geology A Level?

At Brock we are the only institution of further education in our local area that offers Geology at A Level. Furthermore, the subject is taught by a Fellow of the Geological Society.

As a student you will also benefit from our links with Geology departments at Russell Group universities, giving you access to the most recent research findings.

In addition, you will have access to resources and data from the Geological Society of London and the British Geological Survey, which means you will study using the most up-to-date information.

Teaching & learning

Teaching involves examining rock and fossil specimens, scientific experiments and demonstrations. Photos and presentations will also help unlock key ideas about rock formations and processes.

You will work both in groups and individually to produce assignments and research documents. Recent news articles and documentaries will aid discussion, as will journals and scientific papers.

Field visits within the UK and abroad will provide important opportunities to test and refine the skills you have learned in the classroom.

Professional geologists, including the highly respected geologist Professor Iain Stewart, often visit the College to give talks.

Information & support

We recommend that you purchase the Geology course OCR textbook in order to aid your independent study.

You will need to contribute to travel and accommodation expenses for fieldtrips.

Minimum entry requirements

Five GCSEs at grade 4 and above with a minimum average GCSE score of 4.0, including:
•    English Language grade 5
•    Maths grade 5
•    Science at least one grade 5

In addition, a general interest in geology and the history of how the Earth has evolved is essential.

Course structure

  • Gain a wealth of knowledge about earth structure, earthquakes, plate tectonics and geological structures.
  • Discover more about the rocks and minerals that make up the Earth, including igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks.
  • Develop fundamental practical skills to support laboratory experiments and geological fieldwork in the UK and overseas.
  • Learn about real life geological contexts such as geohazards and petroleum geology, and how fossils can tell us the story of life on Earth.
  • Analyse engineering and environmental geology by looking at buildings in earthquake zones and evaluating the challenges of building in unstable landslide zones.
  • Understand how the challenges facing us in the 21st Century, such as diminishing water supplies and energy resources, can be tackled using the expertise of Earth scientists.

What can I do with this qualification?

This course can open doors to Geology degrees and ultimately a career in geology – the latter being a well-paid vocation with many opportunities to travel. In fact, due to a worldwide shortage of geologists you can expect reasonably good employment prospects following higher education.

Environmental engineering and geological surveying are among the roles to which Geology graduates are particularly suited. Employment opportunities can range from the groundwater industry and the construction industry, to the oil, gas and petroleum industry.

Former students have gone on to work for organisations such as BP and the British Geological Survey.
