Uniformed Protective Services students raise £795 for homeless veterans by camping at Brock for The Great Tommy Sleep Out
14 April 2026
Twenty-one Uniformed Protective Services students from Brockenhurst College abandoned their home comforts to camp on the sports field recently in support of homeless veterans.
The group were joined by two staff members for the chilly overnight experience that saw them smash their £500 target by raising £795 from 54 supporters on JustGiving.
It was all part of The Great Tommy Sleep Out campaign run by Royal British Veterans Enterprise, which works to help former servicemen and servicewomen who have fallen on hard times.
The group relied on camping gear and nutritional provisions to support them through the wintry March night, which saw temperatures fall well into single figures.
Uniformed Protective Services lecturer James McIntosh said: “We are proud to be taking part for the first time because it reflects some of our college values like respect, responsibility and community service.
“Some of our staff members are military veterans and many of our students are preparing for careers in the uniformed services and public sector, and this event allows them to put compassion and citizenship into action.”
Sleep out events were held across the country in March, raising both funds and awareness.
By the end of the month, the campaign reported raking in £445,000, with more expected.
